CIS APPROVAL: KNOW YOUR EXPIRATION DATES!
The USCIS approval – also known as the I-171-H – is one of the most important documents in your dossier, since it is the document that allows you to bring your adopted child home to the U.S.
When you receive your CIS approval, you will keep the original to bring with you on your second trip to Russia. For your dossier, you will make a photocopy of the original CIS approval. You will attach a cover sheet with a statement saying that you certify it is a true and exact copy of your CIS approval. That statement gets notarized, and then the whole thing (statement and photocopy) apostilled. It is sent to Russia as part of your paperwork.
There are actually three dates to keep track of regarding your CIS approval:
- First and foremost: the date when the approval itself expires. The approval is good for 18 months. So the expiration is 18 months after the date of the “completion of advanced processing.” Typically the CIS approval does not actually show a date of expiration, but only the date of the completion of the advanced processing. This is usually in the upper right hand corner of the form. So, it is up to you to calculate the expiration date by adding 18 months to the date of the completion of advanced processing. itself expires. The approval is good for 18 months. The CIS approval and fingerprints must be valid at the time of your visa interview at US Embassy Moscow at the end of your second trip. Please keep this date in your mind, on you calendar, wherever necessary so that you know when the approval expires! Your CHI consultant will be watching this as well, but it is the responsibility of the family to be sure they are traveling to Russia with current CIS approval and fingerprints so that they can obtain a visa for their child.
Also, please make sure that the age and gender of the child that you are adopting is within the approved range on the CIS approval.
