Russia has been an independent country since the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The population of Russia is over 145 million. Russia - the world's largest country - lies on two continents, Europe and Asia, and spans 11 time zones. It is the only country with all the climatic patterns but equatorial present. Polar nights and days and permafrost in the Northern regions contrast with the heat and rainfalls in the Southern coastal areas. Recent statistics show that there are more then 260, 000 orphaned children in Russia who are in need of homes. And there are about 600,000 children living under institutional care who are in need of families.
