What are the age requirements for parents adopting in Ethiopia?
At least 25 years of age up to 50 years of age. Older parents up to age 55 will be considered case by case and for older children.
Are singles allowed to adopt?
Singles may not apply at this time.
How old are the available children?
Infant to 15 years old.
Can I request the age of the child I'd like to adopt?
Ethiopia's preference is that the youngest adoptive parent be no more that 40 years older than the child they wish to adopt.
Are sibling groups available?
Yes.
May I adopt 2 unrelated children at the same time?
No, each new child needs time to integrate into the family.
Do both parents have to travel?
No, only one parent needs to travel.
Is the adoption final in Ethiopia?
Yes, however the child must be readopted in the US if both parents do not travel to Ethiopia.
How long does it take?
Usually it takes about 3 months to get your papers collected to send to Ethiopia. You will receive a referral in approximately 6-13 months for an infant or older child or 10-16 months for siblings. Please note, referral times can change at any time during the process and as more families submit applications to adopt from Ethiopia. Upon your acceptance of the referral, it will be about 3-4 months before you travel. You will be in the country about 5-7 business days.
What information is received upon referral?
A photo, medical information and some background information about the child.
How much does it cost?
Adoption cost are approximately $20,000 for one child, including travel.
Are the children tested for certain diseases?
Yes - HIV, Heb B, Heb C and Syphilis.
Where will the orphanage be located?
Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia
Will escorting be available?
Onlyly in extenuating circumstances. CHI encourages parents to travel to the country of their child's birth (The Ethiopian government may soon make it mandatory that at least 1 parent travel to the country)
Is there an additional fee for adopting more than one child?
Yes, $3,500 for each additional child.
