VIETNAM PROGRAM UPDATES

Waiting For Official Comments on Vietnam

Children's Hope Vietnam is still waiting for the Vietnamese government to issue a formal statement to adoption agencies regarding last week's news media reports on adoptions in Vietnam.

A wire service article that was published on Monday, April 28, reported that Vietnam will end its adoption program with the United States. In the article it stated that Dr. Vu Duc Long, the Director of Vietnam's Department of International Adoption, sent a letter to the U.S. Embassy stating that Vietnam would no longer accept adoption paperwork (dossiers) from American families after July 1.

Dr. Long, later in the week, raised doubts about the validity of the initial articles when he was quoted as saying, "Vietnam and the US may still cooperate in the issue through a new agreement."

As Children's Hope has been reporting to families for many months, the United States and Vietnam have been at odds over the two countries? Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for international adoption. This document, signed in 2005, is to expire September 1. Leading up to the deadline to extend the agreement, both countries have been firing at each other accusations of unethical practices or improper decorum.

The Vietnam Team, both in the United States and Vietnam, continues to assist our families with their adoptions as we wait for more clarity on the future of adoptions from Vietnam.

Although Ben Smith was recently featured in the E-news, we couldn't resist this fantastic photo of mom and son! Kelly and her husband Ryan adopted Ben from Vietnam in September 2007 and celebrate 8 months together this May. Congratulations on your first Mother's Day, Kelly!
