A mother's love is evident to all who surround her. When Mary Gund adopted her daughter Lillianna in March of 2003, she shared a fence and a small pond with her neighbor and fellow poet, Patti.

"They talked with us about their desire to adopt a daughter from China as soon as we met them," says Patti. "Through the years, hearing laughter through the trees and on the other side of the fence, my family has shared the delight Lillianna brings."

Adoption is more than a triad of birth mother, child, and adoptive mother. It touches your family, your friends, and even your neighbors. These two woman, Mary and Patti, honor the triad and its extensions through poetry.

This Is Why You Flew Ten Thousand Miles
By neighbor Patti Tana

She runs down the hill of your yard
on her first holiday since you brought her from China

runs in her pink Easter dress with her hands outstretched
to the small weeping cherry cascading with blossoms

a shower of pink that flows to the ground.

Stroking the petals with delicate hands
she shows her delight in language
that all children know –
"Oh, Ooh, Ooooh!"

To the Woman Who
Gave Me My Sunrise
By mother Mary C. Gund

I sit on the plane
and I think of you

Now she is mine
because she was yours

You will want
I will have
You will long
and I will be full
Your child is now
my child
Your yesterday
is now my tomorrow

I look forward out the window
at the rising sun
and our child turns
to see the sun setting
in China

"We adopted Lillianna Mei Ai Gund on March 17, 2003 with help and love and guidance from Children's Hope International. We are eagerly waiting for our next daughter to come home to her forever family. Thank you all for helping to forge our family!" - Mary Gund
